Halo: The RTS Version

posted by UBETARUN on February 11th, 2008

halowars_header.jpgWhat drives you to play Halo? Is it the gameplay, or the fictional universe and characters which cause you to play hours on end, or a combination of both? Are you a die-hard Halo fan? If Halo made a drink, would you drink it? If Halo actually manufactured the Warthog, would you buy it? If Halo wasn’t a FPS, would you play it? Well you’ve had the opportunity to drink the drink, and gas prices are keeping the Warthog on paper, but the non-FPS is coming your way, and I wonder if the same market will continue to support the franchise.

The name of game is Halo Wars, and it will be a real-time shooter; the first, from the Halo Universe. The game is being developed by Ensemble Studios, the creators of Age of Empires. But does that mean anything to you? RTS games are very different from FPS. They are similar to turn-based strategy games, but both have their own unique characteristics. RTS & TBS games aren’t very popular within our world, but when the entire gaming community is accessed, names such as World of Warcraft, Everquest, Ages of Empires, Final Final Fantasy, and Advanced Wars hold it down, massively! Check the video and see if you’re down.

  1. Talkback Says:

This article has so much misinformation, I’d be remiss not to say something.

First, the S in RTS stands for Strategy, not Shooter.

Secondly, your lax comparison between Real Time Strategy and Turn Based Strategy claiming they’re similar is false. One is “real time”, and the other is “turn based”, which makes a huge difference in terms of gameplay. The only similarity is the strategy element, but even that’s superficial. It’d be like stating that Texas Hold ‘Em is similar to Spades because both games are played with cards.

The games you mentioned to illustrate the strategy genre are also erroneous. With the exception of Age of Empire (RTS) and Advanced Wars(Turn Based Strategy), none of the other games fall into either genre.

And lastly, why aren’t these games very popular in “our world”? Could it be due to poor editorial content and lack of exposure? What does that even mean; not popular in our world? What are you referring to, exactly?

I’m not trying to troll or start a flame war, I just think Konsole Kingz needs to enforce much stricter editorial standards; fact checking and editing, so they can be taken seriously in the world of game journalism

Great feedback Talkback. Let’s see if Ubetarun steps his game up. Now that you ripped him one.

    1. real-time shooter- clearly a typo which went unnoticed

    2. RTS & TBS are similar; they’re both whack. Similar in the way that you have to take hits/damage. Notice the link to wikipedia to show their similarities and differences.

    3. The listed example of games represent TBS & RTS, in my opinion. Everquest, Final Fantasy, and World of Warcraft are legally MMORPGs. To me, they are the same. Just add the ability to play online and put an emphasis on single character development.

    4. Our world = Urban World. Urban World should’ve been used, as for Konsole Kingz’ audience is broader than Urban/Hip-Hop.

    5. They are not popular in my world. The games do not cross-over into my interest categories. They usually require expensive hardware, and they are not marketed to the Hip-Hop community (unless Mr. T’s appearance in the World of Warcraft commercial was it).

All in all, Talkback is correct. The article was poorly written (by myself). I did not support my opinions, nor supply sufficient & accurate facts. The article does sound as if it came from a neophyte. I shall now punish myself by putting down the sticks, and rewrite the article.
